Maximize Your Time. an example of bible/LA/History integration with teaching the 7 Virtues and 7 Vices

7 virtues and 7 vicesintegrating subjects is a time saver

After a few weeks of adjusting  to homeschooling I realized that integrating my subjects was a sanity saver.

This week:  Teaching the 7 Virtues and 7 Vices ( Integrating HISTORY, LA & BIBLE).

Integrating curriculum is a great way to utilize time effectively (i.e. so you’re not teaching into the wee hours of the night- okay, the late afternoon).  We have a read aloud book going at all times in our house that is related to our history curriculum.  Right now we’re reading Johnny Tremain (sixth grade reading level but appropriate content for our 1st and 3rd grader, US History).  This book, and all the other books that Son Light curriculum has selected, are connected to the history as well have moral (and often biblical) lessons woven throughout the plot.

So, to use our time efficiently, we are combining Bible with LA and History.  This week’s LA enrichment activity/bible lesson is teaching the 7 Virtues and the 7 Vices.  (in Johnny Tremain/our read aloud, the bible is often read at night by the young apprentices as their master has selected verses for them pertaining to their particular behaviors—er, sins).  As an enrichment activity, we decided to look up the 7 Godly Virtues and the 7 Deadly Sins.

Even if you’re not doing the same curriculum (or even if you’re not homeschooling), this is a great activity you can do with your kids in ‘training them as they should go’.

After we identified the virtues and vices, we looked up scripture by googling the {word + scripture}.

  • The girls worked on their bible navigation by looking up the scripture in their Hermie Bible.
  • They read, in unison, the verse.
  • They recorded the reference next to the vice/virtue.

To make it personal for the girls

  • They identified their particular vice and wrote out the scripture on an index card for memorization.

And later, they can journal about how memorizing the scripture has helped them in conquering (or trying to conquer) their vice.
